1 - On Wednesday, February 29th our class will be performing in the Music Share. I don't know what time the performance will be, but I will send out information once I receive it. We will be playing recorders, drums, and shakers. This event is being led by the S'cool Sounds music program we take part in on Tuesdays.
2 - Tomorrow, Thursday, February 16th our class will be visiting East Side Middle School. We will be hearing/reading nonfiction pieces of writing that the students at the middle school wrote. They will be similar to the nonfiction piece of writing we did in November/December but in a more advanced level. I think it will be a great way for our students to see where their work will be headed as they grow and mature as writers.
3 - You will be receiving a form regarding Cook Shop today. On Wednesday, February 29th, our class will be observed by people from Cook Shop during our chef lesson about grains. They will be bringing some reporters, apparently, as well. They need this form completed in order for your child to participate.
4 - If you have not done so already, please sign and return the last page in your child's progress report. There is also space for you to write comments/questions/concerns should you have any. There are a number of forms that have not been signed and returned. Thank you!

Family Friday
On Friday, 2/10/12, we will be having our next Family Friday event!
We will be learning more about the Cook Shop program and making some creative and healthy snacks together. We have studied vegetables and fruits in our program so far, and we will make the best use of that knowledge. We will begin studying grains next week!
Join us from 8:45-9:30 on Friday to help your child fall in love with healthy foods and get some recipes for your own kitchen!

Winter Break!

Building Space Meetings
Just an important reminder!
Today at 3:30pm there will be a meeting in room 406 regarding EVCS's space in the building.
As you know, we are currently very tight on space in our building. What you may not know is that, given our current enrollment landscape, we are set to add three classes over the next three years, until we have two classes on every grade level, Pre-K - 5. The space we currently occupy in the PS 61 building will not accommodate this growth, so the issue we are facing is simply that we need more classroom space. Our hope and intention is absolutely to stay at our current location and obtain more space within this building. This would require one or both of the other schools with whom we share the building to give up some of the space they currently use.
Please attend today's meeting to learn the facts and details regarding the space our school has been alloted here in the building.
Additionally, there is a very important District 1 CEC meeting tomorrow (Wednesday) evening at 6:00 at P.S. 20 where we will debate the issues present to help us get the space we need in our building. Hope you can make one/both meetings!

Happy Rosh Hashanah!
Today was a busy day in Room 205!
It was our first Town Meeting of the school year. All of the classes at EVCS gathered together in the auditorium at 10:30am to join together as a community and sing some peaceful and powerful songs. Soon a schedule will be posted so that families can join the Town Meetings.
Our first song was Down By the Riverside. The kids learned the song quickly, and by the end everyone was clapping and singing like pros!
If you want to sing together at home, here's the "million dollar quartet" - Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, and Jerry Lee Lewis - singing the song!
On the last day of the week (so usually Fridays) we have a full period of Choice Time. Today, students built with blocks, played with puppets, explored with dominoes, designed patterns with pattern blocks, and created their own paper-bag puppets.
Unfortunately, most of the pictures I took of the awesome creativity going on had the kids in the pictures - so I can't post them here. I hope to have them available for Wednesday's Curriculum Night, though!

September!
I can't believe September is almost over! Thank you so much for making my first month at EVCS so wonderful! I am really looking forward to the next nine months together.
I apologize that it has taken me so long to get this up and running. On this blog, I will be posting classroom updates, project reports, homework comments, event reminders, and other great information! Please check here often to see what we're up to in room 205.

- Events in orange are part of the Responsive Classroom program. This is a program used throughout all of EVCS.
- Events in blue are academic periods. Lessons are structured using the Workshop Model for all subjects, allowing students to spend most of the academic time exploring the concepts independently or in groups.
Again, I am really looking forward to a fun-filled year of learning and growing!
